Zurich - Getting Around

Arriving

Zürich International Airport (ZRH) is Switzerland's largest and busiest airport. It is actually in the community of Kloten, 12 kilometres north of Zürich. British Airways flies there from the UK. The easiest way to get into the city is by train. There’s a Swiss Federal Railways Station below ground and adjacent to terminal 5. Trains depart for Zurich every 10 – 15 minutes, dropping passengers at the Hauptbahnhof (central train station.) The journey takes 12 minutes and will cost 5.80 Swiss francs (CHF) for a single ticket covering zones 10 and 21. The considerably slower City Bus #768 departs every 10 minutes during peak hours and takes one hour to reach central Zürich. Almost every large hotel in Zürich also provides a shuttle bus service to the airport.

Getting Around

Zürich’s ZVV (Zürcher Verkehrsverbund) public transport system is, as one might expect, highly efficient, clean and safe. It comprises trams, buses, S-bahn trains, river buses and lake steamers. Tickets must be purchased from a ticket machine or from one of the ticket selling kiosks before boarding any form of public transport. A one-hour city ticket (covering zone 10) costs 3.80 (CHF) and can be produced by pressing the blue button on the tickets machines. Best value, however, is represented by a "Tageskarte" (24-hour card), which costs 7.60 Swiss francs and also covers zone 10 (green button on ticket machine.) The river buses operate in the summer months only, while the lake steamers operate on a much-reduced schedule during the winter. The river buses run between the Landesmuseum (near the Hauptbahnhof) along the Limmat River and out in the Zürichsee (Zürich Lake) to Tiefenbrunnen. There are several stops along the Limmat River. The Zürichsee Schifffahrtsgesellschaft (ZSG) operates lake steamers which leave from Burkliplatz (at the end of Bahnhofstrasse) and offers variety of tourist-oriented trips. If you’re planning to take a river bus or a lake steamer during your time in Zurich, it would make sense to purchase a more wide-ranging ZürichCARD (15.00 CHF for 24 hours; 30.00 CHF for 72 hours.)
